Weekly Business Development Tip How to Get Your Prospects to Return Your Voicemail
Most people hate making cold calls. Calling someone you dont know is very difficult. You don't know what to say and when you finally get up the guts to make the call, what happens? You get their VOICEMAIL.
You breathe a sigh of relief that your prospect did not pick up the phone but you have to think quickly about what message you are going to leave. The decision maker you are trying to reach is swamped with work, phone messages and emails. You need to be creative and you decide to leave a voicemail message that goes something like this:
Mr. Jones, my name is Joe Smith. I'm a principal in the architectural firm of Klutz & Klutz. We provide unique design solutions for companies just like yours. We are well recognized by the National Board of Architects. The reason I'm calling is that we've recently learned some new design techniques that could significantly reduce the time it will take to create your next building project. I'd love to come buy and share this information with you. Give me a call so we can setup a time to get together. Youre going to love this stuff! Once again my name is Joe Smith with Klutz and Klutz designers to the stars.
Ever leave a message like this? I hope not. Do you think a busy decision maker is going to respond favorably to this voicemail message? My guess is that your prospects would delete a voicemail message like this within the first 5-10 seconds of listening to it.
Here's a challenge for you: Call yourself right now and leave your standard voicemail message. Now go into your voicemail system, and listen to your message. Would you call yourself back?
Decision makers want to hear from people who will help them achieve their goals and objectives. If you want someone to call you back, leave a message about him or her. Leave a message about how you might help them. Leave a message that lets them know that they will benefit by calling you back. Leave a message that piques their interest. Be different.
Here's a voicemail message that has worked incredibly well for me for a long time: Jack, Ken Levine calling about possibly doing some work with you and ABC Company. I'll be in the office for the next few hours. Please give me a call at 508-845-8849. Thanks.
You may be saying to yourself that this is the worst message possible. It can't possibly work. It doesn't describe in any way what I do. It doesn't even tell the prospect how I can help them. It does peak their interest though. It's different and my prospects call me back all of the time when I use this message. What does doing some work with you mean? Its up to individual interpretation. There is an excellent possibility that you are reading this weekly tip because you responded to a similar voicemail message.
Secret - It's all in the tonality of my voice, not in the words that I use.
